Carrick on Suir Town
|
| Carrick-on-Suir (Rock of the Suir) is a picturesque small town with a big heart in the South-East of Ireland with a current population of around 5,915. The town has a diverse heritage and a rich history. In a spectacular setting, the town nestles in the lush & fertile valley between Slievenamon to the Northwest and the Comeragh foothills to the South, which provide natural assets to the town of significant amenity & tourism potential. There is a strong community commitment to economic and social development within Carrick-On-Suir. Situated on the National Primary Route N24 (Waterford to Limerick) approximately 15 miles northwest of Waterford and 13 miles east of Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir grew at the tide-head of the Suir, one of the “Three Sisters” rivers of Southeast Ireland having their confluence in Waterford harbour. The settlement was defined by “Ormonde Castle” to the east and a fine 15th century stone bridge of strategic importance to the west. The tidal reach of the river to Carrick-on-Suir lends a distinctive character, which has evoked comparison with the landscape of the Loire, while its South Tipperary borderline location ensured a diverse context of historical contact and interaction with the adjacent counties of Waterford & Kilkenny. ![]() |
