Cycling

     Cycling

The beauty of the nature around Carrick-on-Suir is evident for all to see. From the mountains that surround it like the Knockmealdowns and The Comeraghs to the rivers that flow gently nearby, beauty is abundant.

To truly sample all of the delights, cycling offers the most rewarding experience to capture it all. Cycling allows you the chance to make life move at your pace, you can try and catch everything in a day, or take your time and see the Irish rural life at its quirkiest.

Carrick, also, has a long and proud tradition of cycling, through the famous Sean Kelly. Kelly, one of the world's greatest cyclists through the 1980s, has lent his name to the town square and the sports centre. Today, two very competitive cycling teams operate out of Carrick and continue to fly the flag for cycling in Carrick-on-Suir. A third cycling club exists in the town and is a more gentle affair for those people who still have a competitive streak but not the physique to compete and are known as the Carrick Wheelers Road Club, with Sean Kelly as a member.

Also, whether you are passing through Carrick-on-Suir on your way to another of the Southeasts many treasures or basing yourself here for your stay, a route exists that suit your experience, fitness and general enthusiasm for all things energetic.

    HISTORY INTRODUCTION TO CARRICK-ON-SUIR

Carrick-on-Suir, a beautiful south east of Ireland medieval town is set in the ancient Golden Vale (Gleann an Oir) and surrounded to the south by the Comeragh Mountains of Co. Waterford. Legendary Sliabh na mBan keeps a watchful eye from high upon the 800 years old town nestling in the Suir Valley. Downstream on the Suir to the southeast region we can view the Walsh Mountains from where it is thought by historians that the first inhabitants of the town originated.

Carrick-on-Suir or Carrick Mac Griffin so called by association with the Anglo Norman landowner family of Fitzgriffin, was, from its foundation up to the early 19th Century, an island settlement. The waters of tributaries namely Lingaun, Pil,Glasha and Glen encircled to enter the Suir from east to west. The habitat can only be envisaged as a collection of mud huts, thatched or grass roofed in a most basic scenario of habitation. Most probably a collection of animals provided some self-sufficiency by way of meat and the raw materials for clothing. The swampland and greenery would in itself sustain such agricultural stock with grazing etc.

The granting of a charter to hold a Fair (An T-Aonach) in the year 1247 provides us with enough evidence that suggests a population was building up in the place. This event would be held in a vast area commonage known as The Fair Green. Though now a small version of the original acreage, it is, along with Coolnamuck and Oven Lane, one of the most durable place names of the town.

From the early 14th Century, the governmental affairs of the town were overseen by the overlords “The Butlers of Ormond”, who had been granted the lands of Carrick by virtue of being declared the Chief Butlers of Ireland. This family provided the religious order of Franciscans with its foundation church in Carrick Beg (1336). The most notable members of the clan were Thomas (Black Tom) Butler, the 10th Earl of Ormond (1531-1614) who built the Tudor Manor House extension to the Castle and James 12th Earl and 1st Duke of Ormond (1652) who founded the woollen industry of the mid 17th Century.

From an era of commerce and trade, of employment and prosperity amongst a 1799 population census of nearly 11,000 persons, the town’s economy went into freefall as a result of British taxes and levies imposed on imports to protect its own industry at home. Deprivation, hunger, illness and disease with resultant multiple deaths saw the town in the throes of an early famine. Carrick-on-Suir would not experience any semblance of mass employment until the arrival of the Malcolmson Cotton Factory (1863-1877) which was relatively short lived and later in the first third of the 20th Century with the opening of Plunder and Pollack Leather Factory.

Throughout pages in this presentation we will further inform the readers of the many facets of historical fact, industry, employment, people and places who are and have been synonymous with this town of Carraig-na-Siuire.

How to get to Carrick-on-Suir

    Travelling to Carrick-on-Suir

Carrick-on-Suir is located on the National Road 24 (N24), the route which runs from Rosslare Ferry Port to Limerick on the west coast. The town itself is in Ireland's largest inland county, namely Tipperary. Although the majority of the town is in Co. Tipperary, some of the town resides in neighbouring Co. Waterford, an issue which can lead to some highly charged debate among locals!.

    From Rosslare:

Follow the N24 from Rosslare to New Ross and onwards to Waterford City. From here continue to follow the N24 in the direction of Limerick. Carrick-on-Suir will be the first major town you will encounter once you leave Waterford, about a 30 minute drive away and roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes from Rosslare.

    From Cork:

Whether landing by ferry or plane in Cork, follow the N25 towards Waterford to find your way to Carrick-on-Suir. In approximately 1 hour you will arrive in the village of Lemybrien. Turn left off the N25, onto the R676 and this road leads straight to Carrick-on-Suir passing the scenic Comeragh mountains along the way.

    From Limerick/Galway:

Once on the outskirts of Limerick, follow the N24 all the way to Carrick-on-Suir passing through the historic towns and villages of Monard, Tipperary, Bansha, Cahir and Clonmel.

    From Dublin:

Take the N7 in the direction of Naas (20km) and continue onto the M7 for 10km. Turn left onto the M9/N9 for Carlow (40km). Continue on N9/N10 to Kilkenny (40km). From Kilkenny ring road travel on the N76 for 35km and turn left onto the R696 for Carrick-on-Suir (10km). Travel time is 2 hours 45 minutes.

    Carrick-on-Suir Heritage Centre

This former Protestant church, now restored as a heritage centre, was once part of the Pre Reformation burial ground and church site of Carrick Mor. Its interesting gravestones include a memorial to Thomas Butler, died 1604, an illegitimate son of Thomas, tenth Earl of Ormonde.

Buried here too is Dorothea Herbert, 1770 - 1829, daughter of the eighteenth century rector and author of "Retrospections". Many local artefacts and photographs are on display. The Heritage Centre also houses a Tourist Information Office and the Butler Church plate collection. The centre is situated on the main street of Carrick-on-suir.

Ormonde Castle

    Ormonde Castle Carrick-on-Suir

This castle of the Butlers - Earls and later Dukes of Ormonde - stands above the Suir on the east side of Carrick. It was acquired in 1315, though the oldest part of the castle is a mid-fifteenth-century walled bawn with a tower house in each of its northern corners.

Sometime after 1565 the tenth, or "Black", Earl of Ormonde, who spent many years in the court of his cousin Queen Elizabeth I, added a Tudor manor house of a type common in England but like no other in Ireland. The low U-shaped range of this house forms three sides of a small court attached to the north of the old bawn, whose towers rise behind it. It has two storeys with a gabled attic, rows of mullioned windows with curved-headed lights, and steep brick gables with slender finials. There are few defensive features save for small firing-holes either side of the front door.

The house was a favourite haunt of the Great Duke of Ormonde, but afterwards it was deserted by the family, although they continued to own it until the present century. Fortunately, it was never allowed to fall into complete ruin and in 1947 was taken over by the State, which subsequently conserved the building. The most notable achievement was the restoration of the long gallery on the first floor of the front elevation, whose ceiling had largely collapsed.

This delightful room, once hung with tapestries, has a magnificent limestone mantel bearing the date 1565, and stucco representations of Queen Elizabeth flanked by Equity and Justice. The Queen would have felt at home in this room and in the rest of this house, which was probably intended, for she is believed to have promised favourite cousin "Black Tom" that she would one day honour Carrick with a visit.

    The Old Bridge Carrick-on-suir

The Old Bridge is situated at the end of Bridge Street, off the Main Street. This seven arched bridge dates back to the mid 15th. Century. It predates the voyage of Columbus to the New World. Originally built in c.1447 by Edmund MacRichard Butler it was for centuries the first bridge above the estuary and hence strategically important as a link between south Leinster and east Munster

    Ahenny High Crosses

The two Ahenny crosses are impressive, both about four metres tall and dating from the 8th century. They are somewhat unusual in that they're almost exclusively covered in an interlacing design. Only on the bases are there any panels depicting the more typical religious scenes.

They are said to represent the transition from the older abstract designs of high crosses to the pictorial scenes found on later crosses. Another odd feature are the removable cap stones known as mitres (bishop's hats).

Only just opened in June 2003, the store in Carrick-on-Suir is positioned in a beautiful part of Tipperary in the valley of Slievenamon. Located about three miles west of Carrick-on-Suir and housed within two authentic thatched cottages in Dove Hill, Blarney Woollen Mills lies close to the banks of the famous river Suir, opposite the legendary Dove Hill castle. The castle, a 14th century tower, now a ruin, is steeped in wonderful Celtic history.

    The Comeragh mountains

The Comeraghs are located just 10km from Carrick-on-Suir and there is hardly a week in the year without mountaineers, climbers and hill walkers of some description out enjoying them. They are one of the finest ranges in the country and have a great mix of mountain features.

There's the long and precipitous Knockanaffrin Ridge, the shadowy depths and glacial amphitheatre of Lough Coumshingaun, the magnificent plateau, the falls in Coum Mahon, the tremendous variety of the Nire Valley as well as the wealth of flora and fauna. The Comeraghs are well covered in the Ordnance Survey of Ireland's Discovery Series No.75 Map and a number of good walking routes are described in "East and South".

    Mahon Falls

Mahon falls is a must see for all visitors to the area. This area provides breathtaking sights in the most tranquil of settings. As well as the magnificent waterfall visitors are also treated to an experience which can only be described as magical, which is described below. This drive from Carrick-on-Suir offers some sensational views of the mountains, and the many high viewing points on the way provide excellent panoramas over the green countryside below.

Turn right at the sign for Mahon Falls About 150 metres further up the road you will go down in a small incline. This part is known as the Magic Road. Stop at the fairy tree situated a few yards from the road to your left and turn off the engine. You will find to your amazement that the car will travel backwards up the hill.

A few hundred metres further on you will come to a car park and a signpost tells you that the footpath will bring you to the Mahon Falls. It is a pleasant and easy family walk and will take about 15 minutes. The best time to visit the falls is after a heavy rainfall when water is cascading with immense force down the steep rock face to the pools several hundred feet below. This is sheep country; but the wild feral mountain goats with their impressive curved horns are easily spotted on the precipitous slopes.

Sean Kelly was consistently one of the top achievers in professional cycling for over 18 years. With his 22 Classic wins he is statistically the fourth most successful professional cyclist of all time behind Eddy Merckx (50), Bernard Hinault (29) and Jacques Anquetil (29).

Born on May 24, 1956, Sean Kelly was the dominant classics rider in the 1980’s. Kelly began his professional career in 1977. He won almost every important race on the calendar except the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia, and the World Championship Road Race. Kelly was another complete rider who could sprint, time-trial and climb with the best, although he did have trouble in the heat and on the major climbs in the Tour de France.

Kelly was a rider’s rider, a professional’s professional. His record in the Tour de France of fifteen starts and twelve finishes attests to this. Kelly raced hard during entire racing calendar.

In addition to his record in the CyclingHallofFame.com designated races, he also won the Paris-Nice a record seven times, the Tour of Switzerland twice, and the Grand Prix de Nations, the then most prestigious time trial of the year, once. Kelly retired from professional competition in 1994.

The Clancy Brothers

The Clancy Brothers

    The Clancy Brothers

The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were the seminal Irish Ballad group and their influence has been central to the folk revival, in both Irish and American contexts, and the huge revival of interest in and performance of traditional Irish music throughout the world

The group comprised of Paddy (1922-98), Tom (1923-90) and Liam Clancy, three of nine children, from Carrick-on Suir, Co. Tipperary and Tommy Makem of Keady, Co. Armagh. After a spell in the RAF during the Second World War, Pat and Tom emigrated to America in 1948, working first in Cleveland and eventually settling in New York. They worked at various jobs, always aspiring to be actors, eventually producing and acting in a very successful productions of "Othello" and of Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars. Other plays were not quite as successful and in order to pay the theatre rent, they decided to put on midnight concerts in the Cherry Lane Theatre. Folk music interest was emerging and people who are now legendary, Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, Jean Ritchie, Jack Elliott, Theo Bikel and Bob Dylan took part. Paddy and Tom also performed. Later, they teamed up with Lou Gordon to do a "Swopping Song Fair" at the Sheridan Square Theatre. These performances encouraged them to develop their Irish song repertoire and the popularity of the Irish songs gave Paddy the idea of putting out an LP on his own label, which he formed in l956 and called Tradition Records.
Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem, met in Ireland while working with Diane Hamilton who came to Ireland to collect traditional songs, both emigrated to the United States in 1955. They became involved in acting but discovered they could make a better living singing at clubs. Paddy and Tom joined in whenever they could and the group, while not yet classed as a group, began to build popularity.

The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem first were billed as such in 1956 when they performed at the Gate of Horn Club in Chicago and they became more widely known performing at fund-raising concerts for the Cherry Lane Theatre and at the Woodie Guthrie benefits. They first recorded in 1959, producing their LP "The Rising of the Moon" on Pat's Tradition Records. At this time the band began touring in the United States, especially in Chicago and New York and became well known for their performances in the Village Vanguard, the Village Gate and Gerde’s Folk City. At a very elegant uptown club, The Blue Angel, they were spotted for their first major exposure to a large American audience which came when they first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in 1961 and it lead to widespread acclaim all over the United States.

Many of the Clancy’s memorable ballads can still be heard throughout many of Carrick-on-Suir’s popular public houses are a few pints of the Black stuff.

    Tom Kiely - Olympic Hero

The outstanding Irish-born personality of the early years of the Olympic Games was Tom Kiely, who won the all-round Championship, the forerunner of the Modern Decathlon, at the Games in St. Louis in 1904.

His victory was claimed by the United Kingdom or Great Britain but the Olympic historians Dr. Derenc Meso and David Guiney have now established beyond argument that Kiely was, in fact, representing Ireland and indeed paid his own expenses in travelling from Ireland to St. Louis.

Tom Kiely hailed from Ballyneale just outside Carrick-on-Suir and achieved his gold in 1904 becoming the first Olympic multi-event track champion for 16 centuries.
Tom Kiely's win in the Decathlon, then known as the "All-Around Championship" was noteworthy as all ten events were held on the same day.

    The events were:

      100yds

      Shot Putt

      High Jump

      800yard walk

      Hammer

      Pole Vault

      120yards Hurdles

      56lbs Weight Throw

      Long Jump

Fishing

Fishing in and around Carrick-on-Suir

    Fishing

Angling on the lower River Suir.

As the river drains large areas of limestone it makes an ideal habitat for Atlantic salmon and native brown trout. Indeed the River Suir has many times been described as the “anglers paradise of Europe” as regards wild brown trout fishing.

Angling on the Suir is best around Carrick and upstream. The angling season begins on the 17th March and extends to 30th September subject to bye-law each year.

The River Suir rises in the Devil's Bit Mountain, runs South to Cahir and then East to Waterford Harbour. It is an excellent limestone trout river from near it's source to where it meets the tide at Carrick-on-Suir. The main tributaries are the Tar, Nire, Anner, Clodiagh, Multeen and Aherlow. It holds a heavy stock of fish and has several tributaries which also provide good trout fishing. The general character of the river is a long series of rather shallow gravelly glides with a very rich weed growth.

There are occasional stony runs and some deep pools. It flows through rich farmland and it is well sheltered by waterside trees. The banks are rush-grown in many places. Wading is generally easy and there is plenty of cover but the trees do not interfere too much with angling.

The relative uniformity of the nature of the riverbed type means that the dominant fly hatches are more or less similar over the entire length of the river, with the exception of the Mayfly , which is found mainly between Camus Bridge and Golden, and stoneflies, which are confined to fast shallow sections. The main flies are olives, iron-blues, alders, reed smuts, midges, caenis, hawthorn, pale wateries, sedges and murroughs.

The best of the salmon fishing is said to extend downstream from Ardfinnan towards Carrick-on-Suir. The fishing is controlled mainly by angling clubs and syndicates. The Suir has the distinction of producing Ireland's record rod-caught salmon. It weighed 57lbs and was taken on a fly by Michael Maher in 1874

    NORMAN CARRICK MAGRIFFIN

The town of Carrick is often referred to as of Norman origin by virtue of its early name of Carrick-na-Griffin relating to a major Norman landowner Matthew Fitzgriffin of Knocktopher otherwise called “Lord of the Manor” (circa early 13th century). Other such names include Fitz Anthony, De Valle (Wall), Lundy (Landy), De Brett (Brett), Maydewell (Mandeville) all of which are mentioned in early town history.

The Normans had great battling qualities, great fighters and prominent military personnel. In Carrick-on-Suir, one such Norman family, De Cantillon, Thomas and his wife Dionysia founded an Augustinian Church along the Suir side, going towards what we now know as upper Castle Street. Many of the old Norman names after many derivations still remain in this area. The Hearth Tax Records 1665-1667 for “Villa De Carricke” which can be viewed at the Heritage Centre, provide us with the most interesting sequences of the remnants of the old “names” which are easily decipherable and constitute many of the surnames we recognise amongst present day inhabitants.

The following is a sample of the names that appear in these records:

            My Lord Duke

             Michell Keating

          Edmond Mortimer

River Trade

River Trade

    RIVER TRADE ON THE SUIR

When the 1st Duke of Ormond, Earl James Butler commenced the woollen industry in Carrick-on-Suir in the mid 17th Century it became obvious that the success of the venture with its ensuing rewards guaranteed his town of Carrick and its people prosperity hitherto unbeknown. The town would enjoy prominence comparable to its neighbours Clonmel and Waterford and this newly acquired commercial viability was not lost on one Capt. J.A. Archer. This gentleman would forward a plan to improve the river’s capability to handle ships of large tonnage by making it more navigable and creating a major avenue of trade bringing such ships laden with cargo, by-passing the port of Waterford and sailing to “His Grace’s Quay of Carrick”. Archer was a man of great vision and ambition, though not for himself as his letters of 1668 distinctly profess his loyalty to His Grace The Duke of Ormond. He foresaw sailing ships from Britain, France and other countries dropping anchor at the Suirside docks before progression of its cargo to other provincial destinations by horse drawn boats upstream and the roadway network created by the building of the Ormond Bridge.

In 1756, a sum of £1500 was sought from Parliament to build a towpath suitable for horsepower rather than manpower to assist in transporting goods upriver. In 1830, the quaysides were made to their present state by the creation of a new quay named after its financiers , the Sausse family after whom the berthing place would be referred to in the future as Sausse’s Quay.

In 1836, the Suir Navigation Company was founded replacing all other commercial traffic on the Suir. Fees were set to carry goods by tonnage and shares in the new company were £20 fully paid up. A contract was drawn up with one Edgar Clements to cut a channel through the rocks and build a new quay for £3250. This project was never completed although one section under the Ormond Castle known as the Navigation Cut was part of the unfinished work.

In 1877, Ernest Grubb, son of John Grubb who came to Carrick in 1843 to extend his coal, grain and goods business, founded the Suir Steam Navigation Company, thus improving the commercial usage of the river. Boats carried extensively to Waterford and returned with coal and other accessories of the age. The stores on the quayside were a hive of activity and employment. Although working relations were strained as employer and employee were constantly at loggerheads, mainly over wage restrictions.

The “Fr. Mathew” was possibly one of the most famous of the cargo boats of the time and is still referred to up to the present time. The advent of the steam train as a source of transporting goods did irreparable damage to the river trade. The new station at Carrick, with a track from Limerick to Waterford, fulfilled such an objective as was hitherto considered the preserve of the boats of the Suir. The Grubb family sold out their S.S.N. Company to Thomas Walsh of New Street in 1912 and in 1927 the Waterford section was sold to Edward Dowley & Sons.

The golden age of the river trade was over. The vast stores of Dowleys’, once filled to the rafters with grain, corn, fertilisers and other agricultural necessities and with the sounds of hard working labourers was now empty and silent.

The river Suir’s more recent association with such household boat names as “Knocknagow” I and II and the “Rocksand” would no longer ripple under the weight of the heavy burden. The O’Callaghan family would for some years more continue the arduous business of providing sand and gravel from the beds down river. Alas, the scenes, sounds, and chugging boats are gone but not forgotten. Hard laborious river work is replaced by our town’s spanking new marina as a source of recreational pleasure for the 21st Century and the towering stores are now state of the art apartment accommodation.

    THE CARRICK KNOT OR BEND

The Carrick Knot or Bend is without doubt the symbol of the tradition and history of the town’s association with the tidal waters of the River Suir. Imprinted in stone on the huge fireplace of the main Banqueting Hall of the Ormond Castle since the 16th Century, the open ended loops as used by the great boatmen, fishermen and “Sailors of the Realm” is clear for all to see. The modernity of this simplistic rope entwinement is further emphasized in framed copybook versions of nautical knots! Its title is as above.

Recent enquiries by the author when presented with a lapel pin as a gift, brought into play a coincidence of huge proportions. The logo was none other than the “Carrick Knot”; the place a seaside town in Cornwall; its name: Carrick! It was also the official logo of the Carrick District Council. Enquiries revealed that its origin was late 18th Century leading to the conclusion that Carrick-on-Suir had stolen a march by approx. 200 years.
